About California Institute of Technology

California Institute of Technology, more popularly referred to as simply Caltech, is a private research university located in Pasadena, which is a city in the US state of California, in Los Angeles County, with a population estimated at a number of more than 143 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, fact which makes it the 168th largest city in the US and the seventh largest city in Los Angeles County, also being the first to be incorporated in Los Angeles County.

Caltech was established in 1891 and its motto is `The truth shall make you free`. It began as a vocational school, founded by local businessman and politician Amos G. Throop. It was known successively as Throop University, Throop Polytechnic Institute, and Throop College of Technology, before adopting its present name, in 1921.

Athletics

Caltech's athletic teams are known as the Beavers and they compete in NCAA Division III, in several sports, for men and women, including in baseball, water polo, volleyball, tennis and soccer. They also compete in NCAA Division I, for fencing, competing against teams from USC, UCLA, UCSD, and Stanford, among others.

The distinctive colors for the Beavers are orange and white, and their mascot is, obviously, the Beaver.

Notable Alumni

Among Caltech's noteworthy alumni, there is Nobel laureate Douglas D. Osheroff, Astronaut and United States Senator Harrison Schmitt, also the only geologist to have ever walked on the moon, National Medal of Technology laureate Carver Mead and Benoit Mandelbrot, father of fractal geometry, namesake of the Mandelbrot set.
